Life Of A Polymath

" Teach us all to have aspiring minds . Our souls whose faculties can comprehend the wonderous architecture of the World "  Christopher Marlowe

Achan was a true polymath .Jack of all trades and master of many . His interests ranged far and wide -

The Arts , not only painting but movies and film-making, dance ,music  classical and rock ,writing and poetry. He was a student of all religions , a dedicated philosopher and man of science. In his lifetime he obtained a list of university degrees long enough to fill this page ,his adademic colleagues will testify of his skill as an anaesthetist. His friend GP Aravindan often asked his advice about aspects of film-making for Achan had an "eye" for the beautiful.

Most of all i remember him as being able to hold an audience (of one or several hundred) spellbound with the brightness of his mind.Always the one to charm at any party or social gathering ,he regaled you with tales and gems of wisdom. He continues to live on in our hearts , a man respected and deeply loved- dr skg nair (gopi)-long may you run!

Gopi's Paintings

Even as a boy growing up in Kottayam ,Kerala- Gopi was noted for his artistic talent.Ammooma (my grandmother) told me that he once drew a fine likeness of Gandhi using just a stick in the sand.Throughout his life he painted portraits ,landscapes and murals. He was an especially skilled draughtsman ,able to convey the character of the sitter in just a few quick strokes of the pen.I remember him actually drawing a large mural on the whitewashed wall of our house in Calicut , Kerala.

During the summer of 1996/7 ,towards the end of his life he was especially prolific producing over a hundred paintings as well as numerous drawings. These show a bright coloration combined with powerful sweeping lines.

The galleries above display many of these works , remember images can be enlarged by clicking on them.
